Biotic Regulation and Hydrological Cycle

Works with the theoretical physicists V. G. Gorshkov and A. M. Makarieva (PNPI): the biotic pump theory, the role of virgin forests in preventing a global water crisis, and the preservation of the river basins and lakes of Eurasia.

Co-authors

Victor Georgievich Gorshkov, Professor, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, leading researcher of the Theoretical Physics Division of the Konstantinov Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute. He is the author of the concept of biotic regulation of the environment, which quantifies the stabilizing effect of natural ecosystems on the environment and climate (developed by the mid-1990s, when he lectured at the St. Petersburg Polytechnic University), and of the theory of the biotic pump of atmospheric moisture (2005). He received the 1997 “Green Man” award for the monograph “Physical and Biological Foundations of the Stability of Life” and was an honorary member of the International Expert Group on Earth System Preservation.

Anastassia Mikhailovna Makarieva, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, senior researcher of the Theoretical Physics Division of PNPI. She is a co-author of the biotic pump theory and the author of works developing the concept of biotic regulation, a laureate of the L’Oréal–UNESCO–RAS award “For Women in Science” (2008) and a member of the International Expert Group on Earth System Preservation.

The biotic pump

In the concept of V. G. Gorshkov and A. M. Makarieva, intact natural ecosystems are not a passive background but a mechanism that keeps the environment and climate fit for life. The biotic pump theory describes in quantitative terms how forest cover carries atmospheric moisture from the ocean deep inland and governs rainfall on the continents. From this follows the conclusion Dr Startsev brings into environmental policy: preserving natural forests and river basins is a condition of water and climate security.

Complete destruction of virgin forests blocks the biotic pump under consideration and turns any river basin into desert in approximately several decades.
